Martin Lungley lives and works in Cumbria. He studied at Kent Institute of Art and Design and for many years specialised in the production throwing of terracotta garden pots. After returning in mid career to do an MA at the Royal College of Art, London he now works with thrown porcelain.
Thrown in porcelain with an iron glaze and fired in an oxidising temperature to 1270C, this set is typical of the renewed interest since the 1990s in minimalist forms and white clays. The throwing rings are left very clear and each piece has a gentle indentation appealing to a sense of touch, suggesting the plasticity of unfired clay and a way of holding the form. The cups or yunomi (the Japanese word for tea cup) have no handles to interrupt the line with the emphasis on the form avoiding any sense of applied decoration.
