Cacúlo: (ca·cgu·lu) a common word in Madeiran slang, referring to a mound of earth or clay.
This touring exhibition continues to expand, stemming from the concepts explored in my solo show at MUDAS – Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Madeira (Portugal, 2023); centred around the interplay between myself, the work, material and place.
Having a history of migration, there is a feeling of belonging and not belonging simultaneously, parallel to the idea that my work sits in the space between tradition and breaking-with-tradition, functionality and non-functionality, craftsmanship and idea-based art. This space in-between is where my identity is formed.
This yearning for connectedness made me delve into themes of place, memory and loss – core elements of my migrant experience. I began this project by looking at the integration of local materials and their application to the work – in relation to the use of ceramics within the 600 year history of Madeira. This initial research was a way to look at physical evidence of this history. Materials that ultimately make up the place where I am from, materials that make up who I am. Further development was done with non-physical heritage – stories, gossip and singing shared by family and locals. This parallel between something that is solid, like ceramics fired in a wood kiln and the perishable, like the whisper of how my grandmother met my grandad.
Developed work explores the above notions in a different context. Having lived in Wales for the past 10 years has shaped me into the person that I am today, subjected to transformation.

Esta exposição itinerante continua a expandir-se, partindo dos conceitos explorados na minha exposição individual no MUDAS – Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Madeira (Portugal, 2023); centrada na interação entre mim, a obra, o material e o lugar.
Com uma história de migração, há um sentimento simultâneo de pertença e não pertença, paralelo à ideia de que o meu trabalho se situa no espaço entre a tradição e a ruptura com a tradição, funcionalidade e não funcionalidade, artesanato e arte conceptual. Este espaço intermédio é onde a minha identidade se forma.
Este anseio por conexão levou-me a mergulhar em temas de lugar, memória e perda — elementos centrais da minha experiência migrante. Comecei este projeto observando a integração dos materiais locais e a sua aplicação no trabalho — em relação ao uso da cerâmica na história de 600 anos da Madeira. Esta pesquisa inicial foi uma forma de procurar evidências físicas dessa história. Materiais que, em última análise, constituem o lugar de onde venho, materiais que constituem quem eu sou. O desenvolvimento posterior foi feito com o património não físico — histórias, bilhardices e cantos partilhados pela família e pelos habitantes locais. Este paralelo entre algo sólido, como a cerâmica queimada num forno a lenha, e o perecível, como o suspiro de como a minha avó conheceu o meu avô.
O trabalho desenvolvido explora estas noções num contexto diferente. Ter vivido no País de Gales nos últimos 10 anos moldou-me na pessoa que sou hoje, sujeita à transformação.
