Initially a research chemist, Peter Smith turned his hand to ceramics and started a pottery in Cornwall. He aims to combine the ‘feel’ of traditional earthenware with contemporary ideas and forms. The look of the jug suggests the way it has been made. The basic form was thrown on the wheel in a heavily grogged brown clay and you can see where the potter has used his hands to shape the material, pushing on the handle and pinching the clay between his thumb and forefinger. The jug has a rough texture to touch, et it’s chocolaty brown colour, freely applied white slip decoration and smooth glazed interior give the work a sensual feel.
