Tony FRANKS

View in collection Born in Birmingham, he initially studied geography before training in ceramics at the Wolverhampton College of Art (1962-1966). He was influenced by Ruth Duckworth and initially worked in organic abstraction. He maintains his interest in landscape and geology and transposes this into his work. In the past, he has mixed natural organic elements such as mosses and leaves with china clay, and also used a hole in the ground as a mold for a bowl. These methods enable him to establish a link with the natural location of his working environment. Throughout his career he has taught ceramics and until his retirement was Head of Ceramics at Edinburgh College of Art. He won the international porcelain prize - the Poisson d'Or - in 1995 and has been President of the International Academy of Ceramics.
