Sarah NOEL

View in collection After studying ceramics at the University of the West of England she returned to set up a workshop in the Gower Peninsula near Swansea where she initially made raku-fired animal figures.  In 1991 she took the MA in ceramics at the Royal College of Art as did her sister Anna Noel. Together they had an exhibition as part of Ceramic Series at Aberystwyth Arts Centre in 1993, David Briers wrote the accompanying article: Ceramic Series: Anna and Sarah Noel. She is influenced by the sea, the circus and later the medieval figurative wood and stone carvings of areas such as Brittany as well as European and American folk art. She uses slab-building techniques sometimes making male and female figures out of cylinders of clay to create stylized forms that occupy boats or play instruments under trees. She decorates her work with washes of oxides, stains or slips, as well as occasionally smoke firing her work.
