Rupert SPIRA

View in collection Born in London, he studied at West Surrey College of Art and Design under Henry Hammond (1978-80 BA Hons). For the next two years he was apprenticed at Wenford Bridge Pottery, becoming one of the last potters to train under under Michael Cardew, whose work he had witnessed at a retrospective exhibition in 1975. He made studies from museum collections and became interested in form and our concious reactions to form. In 1984 he set up a studio at Lower Froyle, Hampshire, moving to Church Farm, Shropshire, in 1996. In 2004 he started to combine ceramic vessels with incised poetic texts.
