View in collection Born in Wales, he has lived and worked in Rhayader, mid Wales, since 1978 where he set up a pottery overlooking the Wye Valley in 1984. His pots are usually hand thrown and functional; simple in form and with decoration inspired by nature such as leaves and grasses. He makes traditional bottles and bowls as well as jugs and jars in the tradition of Bernard Leach. He uses both salt-glaze and ash glazes in his work, giving a range of colours through greys and greens of celadon to warm oranges and rich dark tenmokus. An influential figure in British pottery he has been active in the Craft Potters Association and the International Ceramics Festival in Aberystwyth. Much sought after as a demonstrator and teacher he travelled frequently and exhibited internationally. He has written several books; Ash Glazes, A&C Black 1992, Throwing Pots, A&C Black 2000, Salt Glazing A&C Black, 2002.
