Jane PERRYMAN

View in collection Born in London, she did an Industrial Ceramics course at Hornsey College of Art (1965-69) which she has described as a disaster, leaving her unable to work creatively for another 5 years. Initially she worked as a secondary school art teacher before winning a British Council Scholarship to Keramisch Werk Centrum, the Netherlands, in 1980. She learned and practiced a variety of techniques with other international potters. She is influenced by the traditional pottery and textiles of India and Africa as well as early European Celtic pottery. Her hand built smoke fired pottery continuously explores the vessel form. She has travelled and exhibited internationally, and has written books on the subject, including Smoke Fired Pottery (1995) Traditional Pottery of India (2000), Naked Clay- Ceramics Without Glaze (2004), Smoke Firing: Contemporary Artists and Approaches (2007).
