Gillian STILL

View in collection Born in London, she studied painting at the Farnham School of Art (1956-1960), and was Head of Sculpture at Harrow School of Art. She moved to Llandeilo, Wales, in 1965 where she combined part-time teaching at Swansea College of Art with bringing up a family and making her own work. During the mid 1970s the popularity of her work allowed her to make sculpture and ceramics her main occupation. She ran the Fountain Fine Art gallery in Llandeilo for some years since 1989, a fine art gallery which focused on selling painting and sculptures on a domestic scale, rather than a corporate one. Her figurative subjects capture an instant moment 'like a snapshot'. There is often satirical humour and wit in her intricate pieces with surreal, disturbing undertones. The work also mines literary, mythic and other sources for inspiration.
