Born in China he studied stage design at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney Australia. In 1973 he moved to London and in 1987 established Yerja ceramics and textiles with his wife in Devon. They produced work which they sold we soldĀ through shops, galleries and ceramic markets in the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Portugal and USA. He produced tile designs and undertook a large interior design commission for the Biras Creek Hotel in the British Virgin Isles. He was elected a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and for several years edited the CPA's newsletter.
In 2000 he became co-artistic director of Monster Productions (Newcastle), a new theatre company, for whom he was writing and directing. Ceramics then took a back seat for 15 years while Speyer took up novel writing, songwriting with school groups and saw the publications of Devil's Rock and Forest of Lies. In 2015 he returned to ceramics undertaking a part-time MA in Ceramic Design at Bath School of Art and Design which he completed in 2018. He is currently interested in creating small and large-scale sculptural work and in exploring the use of clay in performance.
