Bronwyn WILLIAMS-ELLIS

View in collection She grew up in Ireland but was born in Portmeirion and has strong Welsh connections and is a member of a practical and creative family who include, her Great Uncle, Clough Williams Ellis, the architect and creator of Portmeirion village and his daughter Susan Williams-Ellis who founded Portmeirion Pottery.  A graduate of Cardiff College of Art where she completed her BA and MA, she now runs a workshop in Bath. She is best known for her tile projects for both public and private commissions, but she also makes one off slab built wall panels and other pieces. Her imagery often combines energetic figurative forms in large schemes using industrial biscuit-fired tiles. She decorates these with tin glaze, sponge prints and 'cuerda seca', which uses hot wax mixed with magnesium drawn on the tiles to produce bold and energetic outlines. After a visit to the Alhambra Palace in Spain she was inspired by the use of drawing and colour on clay wall decoration in a public space. Her work is inspired by nature and she particularly enjoy the softness, richness of colour and the textures when working in earthenware, using combinations of low fired clays, coloured slips and highlights of glaze. She currently creates large chargers, sculptural and slab built pieces designed for wall hanging. She was elected a fellow of The Royal Cambrian Academy in 1999.
