Beverley BELL HUGHES

View in collection Born in Surrey she trained at the Harrow Studio Pottery Course under Mick Casson and Victor Margrie. In 1969 she moved to Oxshott to work in a studio in the garden of Denise and Rosemary Wren, making traditional slipware and hand-built porcelain and stoneware. In 1978 she moved with her husband, Terry Bell Hughes, to Llandudno Junction in North Wales to set up a pottery, where they continue to live and work. Visually impaired from birth, her work has a strong tactile quality.  The forms are hand-built stoneware sculptures constructed in layers and often combining pieces of fired clay and textures at the modelling stage. The shapes are influenced by natural forms including shells, seaweed, stones, rock formations and ripples in the sand. She is a member of the Craft Potters Association. In 2003, she initiated and helped to set up a small co-operative gallery in Conwy for members of North Wales Potters.
