Aylesford Pottery (The Friars)
View in collection
The Carmelite order founded the Aylesford Friary in the 13th century but after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538, it would not come back under their control again until 1949. Aylesford Pottery (The Friars) was founded in 1954 by David Leach who taught pottery to the friars. It was taken over by Colin Pearson in 1958 who introduced new designs until he left to set up his own potter in 1961. The pottery was run by Brother Michael McMullen with Portuguese potters until the 1980s. It was then taken over by James Kelsey and is now run by Alan Parris and Billy Byles.
