Antal Pázmándi

View in collection He studied ceramics at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts in Budapest (1962-67) under Arpad Csekovszky, an idealist who influenced a number of Hungarian artists. After a study trip to Italy at the turn of the 1960s/70s, he encountered the latest modern art and started making his first large scale abstract sculptures.  He made large works to occupy open spaces, including a fountain in Debrecen, and others that attached to buildings. He initially favoured a monotone palette but in the 1990s he used bright colours and sometimes transfers on wobbly sculptures. He has always been interested in occupying space, and finding creative solutions to aesthetics, balance and form. He was a founding member of the Horizon Group (1971-73) and the Hungarian Art Society (1989-1994) and has taught at the Hungarian University of Applied Arts since 1985.
