Meri WELLS

View in collection Meri Wells studied art and drama in the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and continues to work in theatre design, education and ceramics. She handbuilds figurative ceramics often using locally sourced clay. She built a wood fired kiln in her workshop which she has used since 1999 burning local wood and making ash glazes from blackberry and bracken. She lives in Aberhosan near Machynlleth, a remote area of Wales where her workshop is based, and has worked in Africa and Eastern Europe. As a child she enjoyed reading and was influenced by the characters created by Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll. Her characters are contemporary yet at the same time mythological, often relating to Welsh folklore. They are part human, part animal, through which she expresses the emotions and tensions that lie under the surface of all human relationships.
