Denby, J BOURNE

View in collection J. Bourne & Son was a pottery established at Denby, Derbyshire, by William Bourne in 1806 and managed by his son Joseph Bourne. During the nineteenth century the pottery manufactured utilitarian salt-glazed stonewares but by the 1920s it had started to produce the more decorative 'Danesby' stoneware including the ranges 'Electric Blue', 'Orient Ware' and 'Regent Pastel'. Such designs were further enhanced during the 1930s by the appointment of designers such as Donald Gilbert, 1934, Alice Teichner and, after the war, by Glyn Colledge (1922-2000), who was responsible for the introduction of 1950, the latter producing the 'Glyn Ware', 'Glynbourne', 'Glyndebourne', and 'Cheviot' ranges. The business is now known as the Denby Pottery Company.
